Home: Welcome

Tahmina Rashid, PhD.

I have served at the University of Canberra (UC) as an Associate Professor and Discipline Lead Global Studies; at RMIT University as Program Director, International Development. I also had the honour of being the President of Development Studies Association, Australia [Nov. 2020-March 2022].

I come from a rural area in Punjab, Pakistan, and lived in many small towns and cities during my childhood and teen years. My parents were truely devoted to girl's education and our employment. Despite our rural origins, education was most valued as well as the only priority. Living in small towns grounded us to the realities of life as well as opportunities or lack of it for many girls in the communities we were part of. From an early life, employment was the ultimate goal and education was the key to a bright future. After finishing my Postgrad, I opted for a teaching career despite unsolicited advice to join public service [infamous bureaucracy] in Pakistan.

My professional activities and my interest in cultures and people have led me to different parts of the world. I have been privileged to meet amazing people from diverse cultures that has enriched my life and informed my teaching and research. Travelling and living in these places away from the glitz and glamour of tourists destinations enabled me to gain insights to these places, cultures and communities, shaped my worldview and informed & guided my teaching practice. My research work is primarily based on extensive field work, individual interviews and Focus Group discussions. I believe that as academics the privilege of working with students and communities brings a responsibility to decolonise research and teaching pedagogies, especially in Development Studies that continues to label and stigmatise communities.

I have been fortunate to develop and teach courses on - Sustainable Development; Gender & Development; Global Perspective on Gender, Sex and Sexuality; International Project Planning & Design; International Project Management, Evaluation & Learning; HIV/AIDS, Poverty and Development; The Ethics of Intervention; Government & Democracy in Developing Countries; Human Trafficking; Field Project; Development Research Methods; History and Politics of Theories of Development; International Human Rights; Foreign Policy of Major Powers; Foreign Policy of Pakistan; Ideology and Dynamics of Politics in Pakistan; Research Methods in Social Sciences; Women and Politics; Conflict and Conflict Management; Terrorism & Counter Terrorism; Issues in Global Politics. These teaching opportunities took me on learning journeys with wonderful students in different continents.
